BAMP Study Animation
The BAMP trial wants to find the best treatment for 11 to 14 year olds who have a reverse bite.
A reverse bite means your top jaw and teeth are further back in your mouth than your bottom teeth.
Braces alone cannot correct this.
People usually have to wait until they are 17 for a jaw operation to fix it.
A new operation is now available in the UK for people aged 11 to 14.
We want to see how well it moves the top jaw forward.
This operation has been used in Belgium for 10 years.
We also want to see if having this operation now means you will not need jaw surgery at 17.
In the trial, half the people will have the BAMP operation and the other half will not.
You cannot choose which group you are in.
This is to make the trial fair. The groups are decided by chance.
We can then compare the results of having the BAMP operation with not having it.
If you do not have the BAMP operation now, you will still be offered jaw surgery when you are 17.
